Witness the Breathtaking Sunset:
Take a stroll up the simple path, just a 20-minute walk from the center of the old medina, along the lively river. This scenic route passes through traditional houses and nature, leading you to the Bouzzafar Mosque. From this vantage point, you'll be treated to a magnificent panorama of the sunset nestled between two mountains, offering a captivating view of the entire city. Capture the beauty with numerous amazing photos.
Explore the Maze-like Streets:
Wander through the hilly medina where streets ascend and descend, creating a charming labyrinth. Observe locals repainting streets, children playing among the houses, and adorable cats roaming freely. While some Instagrammable spots may require a fee, it's worth exploring the less crowded areas. The medina is not overly large, bordered by ramparts, the river, and seven gates, making it easy to find your way.
Visit the Historic Kasbah:
Immerse yourself in the lively square surrounding the Kasbah, filled with restaurants, cafes, and street musicians. The Kasbah of Chefchaouen stands as a historical centerpiece. For a nominal entrance fee (10/20 Dh), explore its charming garden and learn about the city's history through various rooms. It offers a delightful break in the heart of the bustling city.
Indulge in Souk Shopping:
Dive into the vibrant Moroccan market experience, or "souk." Shopping is a prominent activity in Chefchaouen, known for its affordability compared to larger cities. Discover local Berber rugs, cushions, tunics, fresh produce, traditional restaurants (like CAFE CLOCK), wicker or leather bags, wooden objects, and more. The Terrae shop, in particular, caught my eye with its unique designer offerings.
Transportation Tips:
Travel to Chefchaouen by renting a car or using buses, such as those from Tangier or Fez. Companies like CTM provide regular, comfortable bus services with air conditioning. Personally, I took the bus from Tangier to Chefchaouen (3 hours for 50 Dh or 5 €) and later from Chefchaouen to Fez (4.5 hours for 80 Dh). In Chefchaouen's Medina, walking is convenient as it's not overly challenging.
Accommodation Considerations:
Chefchaouen attracts both Moroccan and international tourists, especially on weekends. Keep in mind that many hotels may not have heating, so inquire beforehand, particularly from October to May. Choose accommodations wisely; I stayed at the CASA HAOUTA hotel for 20 €/night with a private bathroom. The rooms were impeccably clean, and the service was excellent. The hotel provided big blankets for chilly nights, and there was a spacious rooftop accessible to guests.
thank you s much about all that information about Chefchaouen
